Stratford Mainline Station Platforms

Type: Train Station Refurbishment

Client: Network Rail PLC

Awards: Winner – ‘Stratford Mainline Station Platform Design’

KDS was successful in winning an architectural design competition on behalf of Railtrack for the refurbishment of the Stratford Mainline Station Platforms.

The redesign of the platforms was integral to the overhauling of the station, where KDS proposed new canopies for the platforms. The design of the new canopies reflected the curvaceous form of the new Eurostar trains. Continual housing beneath these gull-wing roof designs, accomodated the necessary cabling required for the lighting, signage and information technology. Safe access was afforded to these areas similar to that of overhead lockers found within aircraft design.

KDS were also retained by Railtrack PLC as lead consultants for their MFAS (Modern Facilities at Stations) programme of improvement works to 980 stations across the National Rail Network. One of KDS’ prime responsibilities was the identification of stations that were Listed or within Conservation Areas in the East Anglia Region, which necessitated sensitive design and various Planning Applications to differing Authorities.
